Hi, I’m Sam! I’m a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who helps children and families find calm, connection, and confidence again. I believe that every child’s behavior is their way of communicating, and with curiosity, patience, and a little (or a lot of) playfulness, we can uncover what’s really going on underneath the surface.
I work with kids who are feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or stuck – whether that shows up as big feelings, perfectionism, trouble focusing, or challenges at home or school. I have advanced training in supporting children ages 0-5 and their caregivers, including those healing from early attachment disruptions or exposure to complex trauma. I have experience working with neurodivergent kids, as well as children who have experienced sexual trauma – some of the most vulnerable, resilient young people I’ve ever met. My work with these families focuses on safety, attunement, and restoring a sense of trust and connection in their relationships.
I’ve found that when a child has a place to escape, where they can process, learn and feel without fear of shame or judgement, they’re able to grow into their authentic self with strength. I’m not scared to address the trauma creeping its way into the room, AND I know that kids these days are balancing an unimaginable load between all facets of their lives. In other words, my approach is gentle and real, while being developmentally appropriate. I also support parents who want to better understand their child and feel more grounded in how to respond when things get tough.
In sessions, I use a mix of evidence-based tools from CBT, DBT, and motivational interviewing. I’m also certified to use Child Parent Psychotherapy (CPP) and EMDR. Every child is different, so I tailor my approach to what feels most natural and helpful for them – sometimes that means games and stories, other times it’s gentle conversations or creative expression. My goal is to create a space where kids feel safe to explore big emotions and where parents feel welcomed into the process – not as bystanders, but as part of the healing team.
A big part of why I do this work is because I’ve been there. I found therapy as a teen and wish I had it as a kid. I know how powerful it can be to feel truly seen and supported, and I try to bring that same sense of safety and authenticity into my sessions. At the end of the day, I’m just a regular human who believes in the courage it takes to grow and heal.
When I’m not in the office, you can usually find me outside with my partner and our dog, catching up with family and friends, exploring Asheville’s coffee shops (bonus points for a good porch or patio), rediscovering my love of reading, or teaching dance – my first creative outlet and lifelong joy.
If your child has been struggling and you’re looking for support that feels personal, hopeful, and truly child centered, I’d love to connect and see how we can work together.
