Dylan Chriscoe, LCMHCA
he/him/hisA collaborative, play-based approach helping kids, teens, and young adults build the emotional skills no one is born with.
Hey there, I’m Dylan! I work with children at various stages of their childhood, teenagers, and young adults. Even as an adult, working through our wide variety of human emotions can feel very overwhelming, and it’s often a skill that we have to learn. Believe it or not, these skills are not something we are born with. And while I have some education in emotions and counseling theories/interventions, YOU are the expert on you and your family, not me. In working with you, I always believe in taking a collaborative approach to best support you and your family in the challenges life may be throwing at you.
Oftentimes, a child’s behavior is reflective of deeper issues, as they have not had the time or life experience to build the skills to name their emotions. I specialize in working with kids that are experiencing anxiety symptoms, trauma symptoms, anger outbursts, inattentiveness, and other symptoms that may create problems at home, school, and other environments. As we get older, our problems present much differently than they would as a child. As a teenager experiencing anxiety, it may show up as people-pleasing tendencies, or withdrawing from social situations. This is why I utilize different interventions depending on the client. With some clients, I may use more therapeutic games to build trust and connect, while others may want to keep it more conversational. Both are great! In sessions, I utilize aspects of child-centered play therapy, mindfulness based techniques, cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, and EMDR.
Above all, I aim to create a therapy space for you that feels safe, inclusive, and free of judgment. Carl Rogers believed in 3 aspects of therapy that make growth possible for any client: A therapist that has unconditional positive regard for the client, a therapist that is authentic, and a therapist that is able to join empathically with the client. I strive to always create such a space with you, as I believe that trust is the foundation of growth in therapy.
A big reason why I do this work is that I have had similar personal struggles of my own as a child, teenager, and young adult. Once I had the courage to seek help with therapy as a young adult, I found a nonjudgmental place where I could work through feelings of overwhelm, “stuckness”, and other feelings that were uncomfortable. After those experiences, I had wished I had begun my therapy journey sooner. I understand the courage that it takes to reach out, it feels very vulnerable!
Outside of my work, I enjoy traveling, hiking, camping, working out, running, watching sports, and spending time with my lovely wife. A fun fact about me is that my brother and I are joint owners of a sports blog that we write on from time to time!
Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions, or if you would like to schedule a free consultation. I look forward to working with you!
